A Bridge Too Far?
During World War II in September , 1944 the American soldiers wanted to capture three important bridges that were behind German lines. They hoped that by trying to do this is would help end the war sooner due to the fact that they knew that the Germans were beginning to weaken.
The bridges that they were trying to capture were located in Holland. It was believed that if they dropped in paratroopers (soliders with parachutes) they could sneak in and combine with other soldiers to capture the bridges and block the German troops.
Unfortunately, the plan did NOT work. The troops were able to capture two important bridges, but the bridge in a town called Arnhem did not fall. German soldiers had excellent Panzer tank divisions and the mission failed.
